Where are the Loc Styles for "US"?

Hey guys,

Ok, so tell me if it is just me. As you know, I am a YouTube lover and whenever I need something, I go right to ole faithful :0). However, I have been looking for some loc tut inspiration and it seems that for folks with my length, which I consider on the high end of short locs but the low end of medium locs, there are very few. Of course my first stop was our girl The Bronzegoddess01 and while I have, I know over 15 of her loc tuts favorited, my hair is still not quite long enough to pull most of them off yet! Trust me, when I can, I will be doing the most. Okay!

Anywho, I am at a lost because while searching the web, I found far and few between and the ones that I saw either were NOT cute, to short or to long. It leaves me wondering is it just me? Are we, the in betweeners, not styling like everyone else?

I personally am sick of the run into the grown loc hawk, swooped to the side and or curled styles. I want something fresh and new, something visually inspirational to ignite my own creative juices ah flowing!

I am going to have to spend alot of time in the mirror, working it on out to make it my mission to put up simple as well as fancy styles so that we can be represented as well as so I can help others in my predicament to be fanciful!

So, of course I am looking for your feedback so pls leave it below. If you have any styling links for me to check out PLEASE leave them below. Know of any one's channel I can check out for inspiration, or any styling suggestions or inspirations, help ya gurl out! Calling all stylists, bedroom stylists, Fancy folks and stylanista's to help ya gurl O.U.T.

I know, there are more for us than what we see so far!

Smooches,
Jahlicia <3

Finally! A successful braidout :)

Hey guys,

After about 10 tries during my loc journey, I have FINALLY figured out how to do a successful braidout! I know right, lame-o but side eye to me :) I always do it but hate it once I take them out! Its either way to tight or to small or too defined. Ugh!

Anywho, I put my locs in about 12 dookie braids to let them dry cause I had no idea how I was going to style my hair next and ended up leaving them in. Voila! It came out FIERCE!!

So much so, I just had to make this video so check ya gurl out! Let me know what you think!

"I went natural because..." Vol. 3

 @4everChoKawaii wrote:

I went natural because of my 2 year old daughter. Her hair was brittle and not growing, at 2 years old she only had a bout 3 inches of hair. I couldn't figure out what I was doing wrong. I was greasing her scalp, and buying the best beauty supply products around and still it wasn't growing. I decided to do some research. Which lead me to learning about natural oils instead of synthetic ones. Utilizing the curly girl method and eliminating harsh chemicals from her hair. I myself was experiencing massive breakage from a hair dye debacle in which I lost 12 inches of growth and decided to just cut the rest off and go natural for 6 months to let my hair "rest and recuperate." That was 2 years ago. My daughter now has arm pit length hair and and I would never in a lifetime consider relaxing my hair again! I'm having too much fun.

@Glamazini wrote:

My answer is simple ... I went natural because my hair was falling out and I preferred to keep it.

Long story: I noticed the area in front of my right ear was thinning out significantly and the hair was breaking off like crazy. I flashed back to several of my family members and realized that the ones with perms had thinning hair and the ones with no perms had thick lush natural hair. I decided natural was better than bald and never looked back.

@Anomelodious wrote:

I honestly went natural as a literal way of finding my roots. I grew up in the burbs. Deep in the burbs. I don't think I ever saw natural hair or realized what I saw growing up. When I went to school on the East Coast, I saw girls with their beautiful locs, coils, curls, and I deeply felt connected to their hair. I stopped perming my hair my second year in college and was desiring to loc my hair. I never did. I always got criticized when I went home every vacation by family members. They were upper crust, and looked down on my "nappy" hair, so I would relax my hair every spring before I went home for the summer. I'd go through the fall with no chemical only to go back into the cycle the next year. Finally, I broke down, and thought that if I used a texturizer, I would be NATURAL AT LAST! What a joke. My hair was a mess! I had a hair cut that made me look like Anita Baker Rapture days. I was only 19! And this was in the new millennium, not that 80s!!! I looked WACK! I always had ridiculously thick hair. The relaxer would thin it out, and I would jump off the bandwagon because every time I would relax my hair, it would thin out, and I loved big, thick hair. I can't help it, I'm from Texas!!! But, I did that whole entire cycle until I was pregnant, and I began this entire new lifestyle of healthy intake. I ate better, and nothing chemical touched my head and barely entered my system. Matter of fact, I rocked the same natty braids for all 9 months. I didn't get my hair re-done until the day before my water broke. I have pictures of me in my natural journey, including the horrible pregnancy pictures with the natty braids...  WOW! What a journey this has been for me and my hair.
After my punkie poo was born, I rocked the natural for a little while with a press- HOT COMB, not flat iron. Then, I of course reverted back to the chemical. YUCK! I did that for a few months, and went back into the cycle. I got off the awful merry go round in 2009. My hair was thin, it was short, it just wasn't me. My girlfriend, who did my sew ins and still does my color put in my last perm, and I cried. I cried tears of pain because I really didn't want to do it. From 2009 until today no relaxer, texturizer, keratin product has touched my hair! I love my curls. I love my coils. I love my hair. I don't think I'll ever go back. Matter of fact, right now, as I type, my girlfriend's daughter, thus who has become my girlfriend, is doing my hair. She's two strand twisting it and doing a little ditty on one side.

So, really, all in all, I stayed chemically free and true to my texture as a way of growing into who I've always wanted me to be. Big, thick, curly, long hair, I DON'T CARE!

Tasha wrote:

I went natural because...at the time, it felt like the BEST thing to do. In 2005, while my hair was permed, I was diagnosed with alopecia and I was devastated. My hairline all around was gone and I could hardly comb my hair because it was shedding so much. After visiting the dermatologist and being treated, once my hair started to grow back I made the decision to get rid of the chemicals and constant processing.  After a year of transitioning with braids, I became fully natural.

Now, I've been a 'loc head'. For 3 years and loving it. I was inspired by a friend of mine to go natural and loc up. She has locs and her hair is bee-u-ti-ful. She also opened my eyes to the fact that I was gorgeous with my natural hair and this helped me on my journey bolstering my confidence. Sometimes it does get frustrating, but every time I see her hair I get the motivation and the boost I need to keep on going!

@_KarmElle_ wrote:
I went natural because I was tired of relaxing my hair just to add 2 or 3 extension pieces in it to make it look fuller . I could not imagine going the rest of my life doing that . Honestly I wasn't going natural for the health if it I just wanted fuller hair and I wanted my hair to grow past my shoulders . I hated wrapping my hair at night hoping it would be the same when I woke up . Another reason is when I get married some day I don't want my husband watching me add tracks in I don't think that it's sexy lol (all my ex boyfriends thought my extensions were just as real as the hair growing out my scalp) .. Plus I LOVE CURLY HAIR !!!! when I noticed how healthy it was too go natural I was really all for it . I will never relaxed my hair for as long as I live !! #teamnatural

Tiffany wrote:

I went natural because I really felt like it was time to wake up and smell the coffee. I was harming my scalp and hair with harsh relaxers. And I tried every hairstyle you can think of but ended up with every hair problem. Like many of us, I  was in serious denial and didn't appreciated my natural hair. It was time to embrace what I was born with. If everyone else of other races can do it why not me.

"Slave Earrings"...Really Vogue O.O

Hey guys,

Underhanded racism inspired jewelry??

pic via Vogue Italia

Slave earrings, you heard me right! I don't know whether to be upset, shocked, appalled or confused.  Now, I get the "inspiration" as it is ethnic inspired jewelry. but come on Vogue! You couldn't pick a more appropriate name? How about African inspired, cultured or even the blanket term of choice, ethnic.

Now, they did change the name of the earrings to the blanket term, however why did it have to create a controversy to do so? I mean, isn't that like common sense? Smh!

What's next, Jim Crow necklaces? Jena 6 commemorative rings? Gtfoh! Where is the NAACP? Al Sharpton? I mean, do they NOT read yahoo news..? I guess its ok since it cross the water? Bull shit!!

Ugh! To see the article and pictures as proof, click here :http://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-2028817/Vogue-featuring-racist-slave-earrings.html

"I went natural because..." Vol. 2

Kalonia wrote:

I went natural because...
I was trying to figure out a way to accept what I could never accept..my nappy hair! Raised with the mind set that my hair was an "issue", I was the little girl swinging the towel on her head wishing it was real. Years of braids, relaxers and the Jeri curl (whoever invented that...we need to talk); I finally said yes, to the thought of locs. I had cut it all off once, and felt so ugly I cried all the time. My son even said I looked like a boy ( couldn't put a texturizer in it fast enough).Locs, however offer two benefits in one: acceptance and the ability to say,"yes, and its mine!". The beginning took me into a initiation of sorts and again I cried everyday. I felt the ugliest I ever felt in my life, I loc'd two weeks after giving birth to my fifth child. What made me stick to it, when I felt like washing them out, was that this is a commitment like marriage and if I commit to the process it will only get sweeter. And it has, I love my locs they are the crown of glory I always read about in the bible, but felt ashamed because I knew I would never have one. Now I understand it is not the length or texture, but the God given adornment of being their child, a child of the spirit. I love them, but the biggest gift is I accept and love ALL OF ME!

I went natural back in 2001 because I would see women with natural hair and I just felt that we looked better that way. I have nothing against relaxed hair, but I guarantee that any black woman with a perm, would be more attractive the way she was born.

 @dreaontv wrote:

I went natural because I just got tired of having to keep up with relaxing my hair for styling convenience. It's been well over 10 years since I've had a relaxer of any sort in my hair and I don't miss it one bit. I've never been one to define myself by my hairstyle(s) and didn't blink an eye when I decided to cut it to my ears.
All in all, whether relaxed or in its natural state, I love my hair and will continue to love my hair and all of its complexities and I wouldn't change it for the world :)

 @Renneac wrote:

I went natural because I was fed up of using constant heat and relaxer in my hair- my hair was breaking and getting thinner and thinner. About two years before that  I almost considered growing locs but I did not have the support I needed/ wanted. Later, I realized that I only needed my OWN support and I finally took the plunge for ME! Getting rid the of relaxer from my life was a freeing experience that I haven't and would never regret. I LOVE my locs!!

Renee wrote:
Well, I've been natural all of my life, never had a relaxer, but I'll tell you why I decided to get locs :). I wanted to do something different because I tried (various types of) braids, hair color and wigs and I was just tired of that. I love my natural hair so a relaxer or texturizer was obviously not an option, so I figured why not locs. I'm lazy when it comes to my hair (unless I'm going out) so it seemed fairly low maintenance to me. I can't say I regret it, but the frizz drives me insane lol. But all of that is part of the journey. I love how full my hair looks and the locs are coming along slowly but surely :)

Special thanks to all that were featured in this installment!  I appreciluv how all of you came through for me and everyone reading!

Weekly Spotlight: WhoisSugar

Hey guys,
This weeks spotlight is someone that is near and dear to the majority of our hearts! Sugar! If you do NOT know her, then where you been chile?

She rocks, hard! Whether its about natural hair, thrifting or plain ole tomfoolery, you are sure to fall in love with her like we did! Here she is, our Sugar!
1. For those living under a rock, how long have you been natural (altogether)?
HA! My naturalness was first established in the 70’s. It (my naturalness) was re-established on December 2, 2004. So, I’ve been natural for 6 years 8+ months.

2. Being that you are so versatile with your hair, what would you say was your favorite way to rock your natural hair?
My favorite hair style is ANY hairstyle that I don’t have to do myself. #soulcry I really hate doing my own hair, so it’s a blessing if someone else does it for me. Wait. That’s probably not what you’re asking huh? Well, I really liked when my hair was super-duper short. See pic below. This was my 3rd big chop 27 Aug 2007.

Since I am the owner of a whole heap of hair, the Bantu Knot out is my new favorite! Pic below.

3. How long have you been a thrift a nista?
Chile, I’ve been trifting before it came popular…before all the YouTube hauls and blogs dedicated to thrift store finds. I would say over 10 years. Most of the items that I feature on YouTube; I’ve had them for YEARS!! See pic below. This pic was taken July 20, 2006. This thrifted number is in my 10th video. O_O

4. What is/was your most favorite thrifted item? Thrift store?
Hmm. I have this vintage jumper that is the bomb! I can’t wear it anymore more because my booty refuses to stop growing #side-eye. See Pic below.  When I tell you I shop at all the thrift stores, I mean it. I don’t have a favorite.

5. What made you decide to create a YouTube channel? Did you expect to be so popular?
I’ve actually had my YouTube channel for 5 years. I signed up for YouTube so that I could watch this video that was age sensitive. READ: Questionable adult content. My first video (January 2010) was actually a contest entry. I decided to make more videos because I had a blog that was not being updated. I figured I could just do a video to keep people updated.
No, I didn’t expect to be popular. Wait! I’m popular?! O_o

6. I consider you a renaissance woman. What peaked your interest in things "afrocentric"?
Oh honey, I am Mrs. Black Power ALL DAY LONG (not to be confused with hating other ethnic groups)! I love our people. I love our hair, and our features. Being a woman of color, I figured I really need to love all the things that make me a woman of color.

7. Have you always been so hilarious, unique and full of life?
You think I’m funny? HA! I do crack myself up and I think other people find me funny. What’s interesting is that I don’t try to be funny. It just comes across that way…I guess. O_O I must say that it can be annoying when people expect me to make them laugh. Sometimes I’m not in the mood. I think life has taught me the value in being full of life and being an overall positive person. Who has the time to be cranky? Wait, I was cranky yesterday. #pms

8. What are the 2 products that was a huge FAIL on your hair?
1.  Relaxers.
2. Brown Gel.

9. What is your honest opinion about the YouTube community? Positive and negative.
 Hmm, I only watch positive things on YouTube. Oh LAWD, I’m lying! I do watch tomfoolery type videos sometimes (people fighting, drunken people doing drunken people activities, people who are proud of their “dancing” abilities). I will say, however, whatever your get down is…it’s on YouTube. I try to keep it positive on my channel, but the racist, negative, misogynistic, anti-natural people still manage to find my videos. I don’t entertain them.  I block and delete.

10. How do you stay so positive and carefree? What do you do to relieve stress?
 I stay positive because I realize that being positive is a choice, so I choose to be. I try not to let things bother me because that would be like giving my power away. I relieve stress by talking. Honey, I will process things to death. SMH. I also dance, paint, sew, and create.

11. Who do you watch on YouTube? But Sug, we don't mean everyone, just your top faves :)
 Oh honey! This is one of those political questions that I refuse to answer. O_O People get all hurt up when you don’t mention them.  I do like to watch videos that show me how to do something. I also fancy videos on political and social issues.

12. When can we expect to see you on TV or a comedy stage near us??
HA! On stage? No Ma’am! Chile, I would get booed off. LOL! I’m not sure if I want to be on TV…But Sug, you’re on YouTube…

13. You have such a lifting spirit. Do you have a "couch" we can lay on and tell you all our problems?

14. What tip do you have for a YouTube newbie like myself on having a successful channel?
Hmm. Well. Try to be a real as you possibly can be. With that said, be consistent with how you present yourself.  What are you passionate about...find what that is and talk about it.  Humor is good. So is quirkiness. Realness is too. I don’t know why you guys like me the way you do. *blush*  A sista told me today (10 Aug 2011/2:07pm) “…you have a way of making people feel familiar with you.” WOW! That actually made me #soulcry for about 10 seconds

Wow! I know a bunch of us feel the same way that sista does! I hear the church say "AMEN!!!" :)
Thanks again to Sug for doing this for us! I laughed right along with ya!

Again, if you are under a rock and are not aware of who Sugar is, feel free to check out her YouTube channel : http://www.youtube.com/whoissugar
Follow her on twitter : http://twitter.com/#!/whoissugar

Once again, thanks so much for checking out this installment of Weekly Spotlight, look forward to the next one, it might be YOU!

"I went natural because...."

Jennae from Green your Decor wrote:

To put it simply, I went natural because I just couldn't do the chemicals any more. In 2008, I started a blog about eco-friendly decorating, and in turn, it forced me to start looking at how to make EVERY aspect of my life more environmentally friendly. I started carrying reusable shopping bags, paying attention to what I put on my skin, switched cleaning products and made a bevy of other changes — but I just couldn't let go of the relaxer. For months, I would feel guilty whenever I put the creamy crack on my head.  But since I had my first relaxer in second or third grade, it was all I had ever known. I never felt more beautiful than when I had a fresh relaxer and my hair was laying all straight and shiny. AND, I was already lazy about my hair, even when I was relaxed. On top of that, I was already struggling to care for my then 3-year-old daughter's huge head of natural hair.

But finally, the guilt became too much. One day, I literally just up and decided that enough was enough. I would never relax my hair again. Period. And I meant it. My last relaxer was in January 2009, and I never looked back. And every time I tell this story, I think of a poster & t-shirt from Andrea Pippins (a.k.a. my hair idol) of the Fly Girls blog and ILoveMyHair.com. It reads:

"The only regret I have with going natural is that I didn't do it sooner."

@Ebonydivine1 wrote:

Thank you Jennae and Ebony for your candid response. Both helpful and inspiring! Hugz!

"I went natural because...."

Hey guys,

Yep! Here I come with another of my "ideas". Now, as I pretend I don't hear the grumbling and see the eyes rolling (O.O), here is the genius thought.

I am going to add a series where naturals everywhere can proudly say why we went natural.
For example: @RastaPhresh says " I went natural because....I knew there was much more to my hair than hair cuts, braids and even an Afro so I went with locks the original way :)

This is a great way to unite the Natural Movement and also inspire others to join us! It is also very interesting to hear the different reasons others chose to make the bestest decision ever! Yep, I said bestest!

I will also make a video about this to spread the word and of course I need your help for that! Feel free to RT, link and post this to ALL naturals!

So, love it, hate it, tweak it! Let me know your feedback on this. If you are interested you can email me your response (lovejahlicia@gmail.com), tweet it to me (@Jahlicia) or leave it on my FB page (http://www.facebook.com/LoveJahlicia). Oh, and of course "like" my page while your there :)

Naturals Unite!

...and now SOO HAPPY!

Of course, last but not least, yours truly showing my head full of hair before I loc'd it. This was the day I put those awful twists in my hair that prompted my friend to say "no ma'am" and start my locs for me. No shade, they were a hot smokey mess! Did I say smokey? Yes, smokey!

GURL! O.O

BEST DECISION EVA!!! #RASTAFARI

SEXY MAN ALERT

 Holding it down is my bredren @Bobo_Dreads showing us his gorgeous crown! Who say Rasta naw sexy?? Gwey!

LENGTH CHECK=LONG O.O

Superfriend Ben Sharp who's pic I stole but then he said it was cool...right? O.O hahaha! Lovely locs homie!

Do IT then homie!

 ...and my client and friend Dre. While he is the one growing his locs and he is a fairly new client, I would like to take full responsibility for the beauty that is his locs. Y'all force him to let me style it, if not for him for y'all who wanna see it! Hey Dre *wavin* Ur now a starra!

I did that!

....and that! Yayy!

LOTD

To start it off is my personal loc muse, the loc'd empress herself @NerissaNefeteri
in ALL her natural glory! It is impossible not to think of her when thinking of female locStars. In my opinion, you think of a man with locs =Bob Marley and a woman with locs = Nerissa. While she is beautiful and I can go on and on about that, she is intelligent, sophisticated but still real, and a teacher in her own right! See ya at the hair show in Atl cause guarantee, I have to meet you! To my fellow Rasta sisten I say Blessed love Itinually and JAH guidance and protection, always!

Clawd ha mercy, Let us pray...

My gurl @fabienalexis showing the beauty of her locs. You go gurl!

curls....

no curls! I heart this pic!

Yep, once again I have the charismatic @SoulJor giving us another view of her crown! Yes!

Last but def not least is Superfriend Sandi making her debut on the blog and showing up my Panasonic camera with her Iphone camera O.O! Am I the only one appalled by this. Throws camera into garbage...then taking it out cause I was just kidding. Ch..I need this camera..Okay! haha!
